Spring is springing! I don’t know about you, but I thought it would never arrive. We’ve been seeing parsley now for awhile, even pushing through the snow, but today its delicate frills have been joined by greening-up sage leaves, red-veined sorrel, onion spears, lots of green and red shoots on our rose bushes, oregano, and perhaps the most glorious just now: our apricot tree full of just-opening flowers. It’s a joy to see, touch, smell and taste the beginnings of this year’s growing season.

And of course, that means it’s time for us to get into action. By this time last year, not only were our early lettuces, sugar snap peas, kales and spinach up and harvested, our grape vines had been pruned to prepare for this summer’s growth. We certainly haven’t planted any seeds outdoors yet, and had we taken shears to the grapes, they would have frozen from the on-and-off snows that visited us in past weeks. So it’s time to plant and to prune.

In order to set up a good season for our plants, we will be composting the beds and hooking up the drip system, so our fruits and veggies will have all the food and water they need to give us healthy produce.

As always, we graciously ask your help with our efforts. We have two Volunteer Days set up this for May and would love to share time with you in nature’s beautiful outdoors as we work the earth and prepare her for bounty.

The Spring Volunteer Days are:

Sunday, May 6 from 12 Noon – 4 PM

Sunday, May 13 from 12 Noon – 3 PM

The second of these Volunteer Days coincides with  Mothers Day – what a great way to share with your mom and/or your kids – spending a few hours out in the sunny fresh air working a garden together.

As always, you can RSVP for our Volunteer Days, picking what date/s and time/s work for you.

We wish you a lovely spring filled with green, good fresh food, and loving company.

Blessings,

Rabbi Robin Damsky
